District News

• Scouts Australia, Queensland Branch Inc., 2005 Branch Calendar

• Queensland Adult Leader & Youth Leadership 2005 Training Calendar .  Course fees are shown on the Leader Training Application Form (A15) ; fees for Venturer Scout Leadership and Unit Management Courses are shown on the Venturer Scout Course Application Form (A57) .  Note that payment is required to be lodged with the relevant Application Form.

• New Uniform - New Uniform items are now in the Scout Supply Centre - see Price List , and Queensland Branch Policy and Badge Placement Diagram for more detail on the New Uniform.
  
   

Multi-section Events

• Brownsea Water Activities Centre 2005 Calendar of Events has been released - see website for details.

• The Scout Association's Air Activities Centre, Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane, has half-day courses for Joey Scouts, full-day or overnight courses for Cub Scouts, and two-day courses for Scouts, as well as Gliding, Parasailing and Learn to Fly opportunities for Venturer Scouts, Rovers and Adult Leaders.

Joey Scouts

• Joey Scout Air Activity Morning at the Scout Association's Air Activities Centre, Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane
  (10.00 am to 1.00 pm - does NOT include an aircraft flight).  Dates are 5 March 2005, 19 March 2005, 16 April 2005, 7 May 2005, 21 May 2005, 9 July 2005, 23 July 2005, 13 August 2005, 27 August 2005, 8 October 2005, 22 October 2005 and 5 November 2005.  The cost is $9.00 each - see website for booking details.

• Joey Scout Water Activity Day, at Brownsea Water Activities Centre:  30 October 2005.

• Proposed Joey Scout participation badges (National Commissioner (Youth Program) June 2004):

  "We are looking at using four existing Joey Scout badges:

  The Adventure Challenge Badge

  The Environment Badge

  The Buddy Badge

  The Caring and Sharing Badge

  They are also being designed so they fit together into a diamond shape. We expect them to be available in 2005."

Cub Scouts

• Cub Scout Air Activity Courses at the Scout Association's Air Activities Centre, Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane.  The course includes a light aircraft flight, and costs $32.00 per Cub Scout (and $25.00 per Adult Leader , if flying).

  • Day Course held on Sundays only (qualifies Cub Scout for Flight achievement badge (red level)). Dates of these courses are

  • Night Course (qualifies Cub Scout for Flight achievement badge (blue level))

• Cub Scout Water Activity Days at Brownsea Water Activities Centre:  20 March 2005 and 16 October 2005.

• Cubyanya  (Brisbane North Region Cub Scouts Activity Day)  7 August 2005

Scouts

• Scout Air Activities Courses at the Scout Association's Air Activities Centre, Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane.  Scouts may use this course to qualify for the Air Activities Target Badge of their choice.  This is accomplished by pre-course assignments followed by an INTENSIVE WEEKEND.  This is NOT a normal Scout camp.  Scouts live-in under the supervision of Centre staff and are expected to attend for the full weekend. The cost ($52.00 to $57.00, depending on the badge being attempted) includes all meals, flight in a light aeroplane, model glider, feature film, camp fees and all course handouts. The programme is comprehensive and covers all Target Badge requirements - see website for dates and booking details.

• Brownsea Water Activities Centre 2005 Calendar of Events has been released - see website for details.
  Events include Sail Days, Sail and Canoe Level 2 Charge Certificate Courses, Night Canoeing, River Rage, Razzle Dazzle and more.

• AJ2007 - 21st Australian Jamboree, 2 - 11 January 2007 at Elmore, Victoria - "Get in the Game!"

• While the exact age ranges are not yet confirmed, if you were born between 8 February 1990 and 27 July 1993, AND will be an invested Venturer Scout by 27 July 2007, YOU have a chance to attend the 21st World Jamboree at Chelmsford, near London, UK, from 28 July to 8 August 2007, celebrating 100 years of Scouting.  Some details, such as the anticipated cost (at least $6,000) are on the International Event Fact Sheet.  Application Forms are now available; applications close December 2006.  Adult Leader places will be limited to one Adult Leader for every 8 Youth Members in the Australian Contingent.

Venturer Scouts

• Future District Venturer Scout events are shown on the District Venturer Scout Calendar.

• Recent Events:

  • Operation Nighthawk, 14-15 August.  51 teams of Venturers competed in this year's Operation Nighthawk at Goombungee, from as far away as Emerald, Roma and Casino.  Charles S Snow District's Venturers participated in four teams - Burul as part of the Bracken Ridge team, Stafford (supplemented by Boondall) (10^th place), Kalinga (9^th place), and Nundah-Northgate (an all-female team, with one team member from each of Wilston and Stafford) ... 1st place!  This is the first time in the 23 years of Operation Nighthawk that it has been won by a Charles S Snow District team, and only the second time that it has been won by an all-female team.

  • Stone Age Rumble, 27 August.  15 Teams of Venturers, from all of the Districts in Brisbane North Region, as well as Brisbane South Region (Rochedale Venturers, Toohey Forest District) and Near North Coast and Country Region (Dayboro Venturers, Murrumba District, and Oyster Point Venturers, Redcliffe District) were at Stafford Scout Den for a night of off-beat fun and athletic(?) competition in the "Stone Age Olympics".  The trophy was won by Kalinga Venturers, whose team included the Wilston Venturer who was part of the Nighthawk-winning team two weeks earlier!  Thanks to ARC (Venturers), Brisbane North Region, for (once again) organising a fun night.

  • 24th Queensland Agoonoree, 18-24 September.  Venturers from the District joined Scouts, Guides, Ranger Guides, Venturers, Rangers, Rovers and Leaders in providing a week-long, activity-filled camp for young people with disabilities at BP Park, Samford, in the first week of the school holidays.  The hard work put in each day (and each night by the Agoonoram (camp newspaper) team) was effectively balanced by the six VERY social nights in 'Venturer Central' - and who had a 'goonie fling' this year?

  • 8th Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI): 15-17 October 2004.  Venturers from the District joined tens of thousands of Scouts and Guides from all around the world in the year's biggest Scouting/Guiding event (in terms of the number of participants).  While there were plenty of participants from Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Holland, and Germany, contact was also made with Scouts from Oman, Malta, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Serbia, France, Portugal, Spain, Singapore, Philippines, China, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Puerto Rico. The one thing that the event proved is that Scouts - from whatever country they come - are more similar than dissimilar.  Some of the post-JOTI contacts - for badge work - should be very interesting.

  • Wonargo Revue 21-23 and 27-30 October 2004.  Nine Venturers from three of the Units in the District were part of the 47-strong cast of Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Adult Leaders (all under 26 years of age) who entertained onstage in this year's Wonargo Revue, which finished its 2004 season on 30 October.  The Revue is the second-longest running Scouting theatrical event in Queensland (after the Brisbane Gang Show) - this was its 33rd consecutive annual season.  All of the hard work which commenced (for the cast) with the first rehearsal on 4 July 'paid off' in a very entertaining three hours of songs, dancing and comedy sketches, showcasing once again some of the varied talents of Scouting's youth members.

Rovers

• TassieMoot - 16th Australian Rover Moot:  Lake Barrington, Tasmania, 30 December 2004 - 10 January 2005

• 63rd New Zealand Rover Moot, 25-28 March 2005 (no website as yet, but the New Zealand Rovers website will have a link before the end of 2004).  If you want to see what a kiwi Moot is like, see the SkoolMoot 2004 website.  See also Australian info page.

• Nepal Trek and Everest Base Camp Trek, September 2005, in association with Scouts Nepal and Scouts Japan.  Anticipated cost $3,500 - $4,500.  A medium to high level of fitness, and experience in multi-day hiking, is essential.

• 13th World Scout Moot, Mozambique, 10 - 19 August 2008 - start planning and saving now to attend - see World and Australian Contingent pages for updates and information.

• 12th World Scout Moot, Hualien, Taiwan, 30 July - 10 August 2004 - see what Rovers from all over the world did at the Moot - the daily Moot newspaper is on the News page of the website.

Adult Leader Training

• District Training Meetings (for all Leaders) are held at the District Training Den, Railway Parade, Clayfield, at 7.30 pm on the last Tuesday of each month (except December).

• Training Course Details and Information are available on the Training Calendar which can be downloaded from the Scouts Australia, Queensland Branch, Training webpage.  Course Applications require a Course Application Form (A15 - Jan 04).
